The reverence for trees is at the heart of Celtic spirituality. Druids had their teaching centers in the midst of Oak groves, and the words for wood and wisdom are similar (Welsh gwydd and gwyddon). The Celtic Druids, priestesses and healer-women encoded their deep knowledge of trees and herbs into an ancient cryptic tree alphabet – a form of Ogham. The ‘Tree of Life’ is an esoteric philosophy common to many cultures and mythologies. The tree was envisioned from ancient times with roots that grow deep in the ground, branches reaching high into the heavens. The interlacing branches symbolize the Celtic belief in the Continuity of Life.
It is believed that the tree of life represents the afterlife, and connection between the earth and heaven. The bond and affection to trees is so deep that Celts believed the actual trees were their ancestors, gatekeepers to the Celtic Otherworld. As such, the tree of life in Celtic Culture is sacred. Today it very much represents family.
